Welcome Message
It is my great pleasure to welcome you to the 17th International Symposium on Advanced Vehicle Control (AVEC ’26), to be held at the Tsukuba International Congress Center in Tsukuba City, Japan, from September 7 to 11, 2026. As noted in the “History” section of this webpage, the first AVEC symposium was successfully held in Yokohama, Japan, in 1992. Since then, AVEC symposia have been convened every two years in various locations throughout Asia, Europe, and North America, and have become widely recognized as one of the most important international conferences on vehicle dynamics and control.
A defining characteristic of AVEC is its balanced participation from both industry and academia, fostering valuable exchanges between engineers involved in vehicle development and researchers specializing in dynamics and control from around the globe. In this respect, AVEC serves not only as an academic symposium but also as a truly international forum where participants from diverse nations, companies, and universities can openly share new findings, insights, and experiences.
In keeping with this tradition, AVEC ’26 will welcome both practical and theoretical contributions across a broad spectrum of fields related to vehicle dynamics and control. The symposium will commence with a welcome party on the evening of the first day. Each morning over the following three days will feature a keynote lecture delivered by a distinguished engineer or researcher from either industry or academia. Subsequent technical sessions, held in multiple parallel rooms, will present the latest research and developments across the topics outlined in the “Symposium Topics” section of this webpage. Throughout the symposium, an exhibition will showcase vehicles and components that embody both cutting-edge innovations and historically significant technologies developed by leading Japanese automakers and component manufacturers.
On the final day, participants will have the opportunity to tour the research facilities and proving grounds of the Japan Automobile Research Institute, one of the nation’s foremost centers for automotive research. A banquet will be held at Hotel Nikko Tsukuba on the evening of the third day.
I wish to express my sincere appreciation to all financial sponsors, exhibitors, supporting organizations, and committee members whose dedication and efforts will help make AVEC ’26 a success. With such strong support, I am confident that AVEC ’26 will prove both rewarding and inspiring for all participants.
I look forward to welcoming you to Tsukuba in 2026.
- Shinichiro Horiuchi
- General Chair, AVEC ’26

History
History of AVEC
AVEC is an International Symposium initiated by Japan
Before AVEC was born, IAVSD (the International Association for Vehicle System Dynamics) Symposium has been characterized as a high-quality academia-oriented conference event focusing on theoretical and analytical discussions on vehicle dynamics of road and rail. At that time, most of participants of IAVSD symposium were researchers and experts from universities and support from industry was not high.
In 1992, the 1st AVEC symposium was initiated by Vehicle Dynamics Technical Committee of Society of Automotive Engineers of Japan (JSAE) to break down the barrier between academia and industry, and then bring vehicle dynamicists from both societies, with approximately equal participations appearing from each, to frankly communicate and deeply discuss about knowledge and future perspectives on advanced vehicle control.
The 1st AVEC Symposium was held at Yokohama, Japan, 14-17 September 1992. AVEC stands for Advanced Vehicle Control. The word is inspired from a preposition in French, which means “with ....”, “together with ...”, fitting well with the concept of the symposium.
As advances in electronic control technologies in 1980-1990, which was the era of active control of vehicles, active suspension control, 4WS, 4WD, DYC, handling and stability analysis were main progressive technologies in the field of automotive engineering since that time. AVEC has been positioned to be a place to bring innovation in the field of vehicle control.
Furthermore, we would like to express our sincere appreciation to the great support from international friends/colleagues in IAVSD societies. IAVSD has strongly supported all AVEC symposia. It was agreed that IAVSD Symposia will take place on uneven years, AVEC Symposia on even years. Many special issues of Vehicle System Dynamics journal have been published with selected best papers of AVEC. Since 2014, AVEC has also started collaboration with the International Munich Chassis Symposium (chassis.tech plus). After having the 3rd AVEC Symposium in Aachen, Germany, 1996 which was the first time AVEC went to an international venue, the kind support by these communities has made AVEC grow up across different continents and then AVEC has been recognized for its excellent reputation internationally in the field of vehicle dynamics and control. Up to now, AVEC has become a big family and there are more than 2,000 scientific papers published from AVEC symposia.
In 2014 when AVEC was held at Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology, the establishment of the permanent board of AVEC (AVEC Board) was proposed by the international scientific committee of AVEC’14 to maintain AVEC key concept, control the scientific quality as well as general organization of AVEC symposium, and guide the future direction of AVEC.
AVEC legend will still continue.
As one of important milestones in the 30th anniversary of AVEC at Kanagawa Institute of Technology, AVEC will remain to be an attractive place for next-generation flagship vehicle dynamicists to accelerate the research and development of chassis technologies and steer the mobility society to the right way.
